This is almost entirely dependent on the league your child is playing in. For adults, metal cleats are not against the rules, but since children can be less careful, they are often banned for the kids’ safety. Ask your coach or official about the best children’s soccer cleats for their league.
Soccer cleats can be worn by baseball players in little league and youth leagues, but baseball cleats should not be worn during a soccer match. Soccer cleats (youth and adult sizes), have extra toe studs that can badly hurt other players while doing a steal or slide tackle.

When your child puts on their youth firm ground soccer cleats, they should fit snugly onto the foot to protect them while running. However, your child should still have enough room in the front of the cleat to comfortably move their toes without much restriction.
At such a young age, youth soccer cleats are not always essential. They are not a requirement in most organized leagues for kids, but it’s worth noting that they will reduce injury and will ultimately improve foot health for dedicated players.
Yes, in the game of soccer, different surfaces will require different types of youth soccer cleats. Kids’ outdoor soccer requires players to wear spikes or studs, but indoor players need to wear kids’ soccer shoes with flat soles. Kids soccer cleats for boys and girls, from small little kids' sizes to youth. Shop Nike, adidas and Puma cleats for grass and synthetic fields, up to adidas Elite.
Kids soccer cleats are sized differently by each brand. Nike groups kids' shoes into Baby and Toddler (roughly ages 0 to 3), Little Kids (3 to 7) and Big Kids (7 to 12), and its chart overlaps the two younger groups between sizes 8C and 10C. adidas uses Babies and Toddlers, Children (about ages 4 to 8), and Youth and Teens, while Puma splits its kids' sizes into Toddler, Little Kids, and Junior.
Most cleats here start in youth Y sizes, about a third start in little kids' K sizes, and about a dozen go down to 10K or smaller, from brands including adidas, Puma, and Vizari. Once the player reaches youth sizes, Nike's chart lines them up with adult sizes: a 7Y equals a men's 7 or a women's 8.5.
Fit for today, not next season. Leave about a thumb's width at the toe, check that the heel stays put, and try them on in match socks, as Nike's kids guide recommends; if your child is between sizes, Nike's chart points to the larger one. AYSO notes that cleats that are too big, too small, or worn down can increase the chance of injury, and Nike puts the replacement window for kids at six to eight months. To finish the kit, see our youth soccer shin guards.
Every pair in this collection is an outdoor cleat. Firm ground (FG) cleats are made for natural grass. FG/MG cleats, the most common plate here, are made for use on natural and synthetic surfaces, and Nike recommends multi-ground for young players who switch between different fields. Puma lists its FG/AG cleats as suitable for firm natural surfaces and artificial grass. For turf fields or gym floors, shop our kids turf soccer shoes and youth indoor soccer shoes.
adidas and Nike make up most of this collection. Nike's kids cleats carry a Jr. name and come in Academy and Club, with a few Pro models, and Nike calls Club and Academy the lower-priced options that suit most youth players.
See them all in our Nike youth soccer cleats. adidas kids cleats run from the entry-level Goletto through Club and League up to Elite, including Predator, F50 and Messi editions, in our adidas youth soccer cleats. Puma adds Future and Ultra Match models and the Attacanto, and you'll find more in our Puma youth soccer cleats. Umbro and Vizari fill out the lineup.
